September 2006 - Plant of the Month
Vaccinium
corymbosum
(Blueberry)

Type: fruit
Height: 4-9’
Hardiness: Zone 3-9
Light requirements: Full sun or light shade
Bloom Color: white
Blueberries thrive
in full sun and in acid soil that is moisture-retentive yet well drained.
They grow best in soil with a pH between 4-5 (a pH
of 4.5 is ideal). Blueberries
require about 1 in of rain or irrigation per week. Surrounding your plants
with a 4-5 ft circle of mulch helps keep the soil moist and prevents the
growth of weeds. Apply a 2-4in layer of wood chips, shredded bark, or other
organic material. The year after planting (and every year
thereafter) apply a fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants at
flowering time in spring and again about 4 weeks later. They are perhaps
the best landscape plant going…tolerant of shade, flowering heavily,
produces edible fruit, and has magnificent fall foliage.
