July 2004 - Plant of the Month

Abies concolor
(Silver, Concolor Fir)

Type: evergreen
Height: 40-60’
Hardiness: Zone 4-7
Light requirements: Full Sun or part shade
Bloom Color:  -

Perhaps the sweetest of all the firs, Concolor or Silver Fir adds a dramatic touch of silvery-blue to the landscape. Very soft to the touch, its flattened needles give off a pleasant aroma, especially when crushed. Surprisingly, we have found that deer tend to dislike this fir, whereas other firs tend to be nibbled by them. Slower growing than some of the spruces, it still will get quite large.
