New Trees
Weeping Katsura Tree

Cerciciphyllum japonica 'Morioka'

(Weeping Katsura Tree)

This selection is somewhat similar to Cercidiphyllum japonicum Pendula but the overall growth habit will be taller than broad. It is a vigorous grower and can reach 40-50' with a spread of 20-30' over the course of its considerable lifetime.  Expect its growth in ten years to be 15 to 25 feet tall with a slightly less spread.

This is not a tree for the small garden, but spectacular when given the room.  As a young tree 'Morioka Weeping'; will grow vigorously with strong vertical growth and be only moderately weeping. As it matures and the growth rate slows, plants will exhibit the weeping form more strongly. The new spring leaves emerge with reddish-purple cast and quickly take on a lovely blue-green color through the summer.   In the fall, the leaves gives off a spicy, cinnamon aroma as they turn a golden-yellow color.

Full sun or light shade. Needs adequate moisture until established, but then quite adaptable in zones 4-8. Either propagated by cuttings or grafted on C. japonicum.

'Wright Brothers' is also resistant to leaf scorch and is hardy to-35 F. The growth rate is said to be twice as fast as the species.

Fall color is excellent, as are all the Sugar Maple cultivars. It has a tendency to keep a straight single leader and branching is abundant and branching angles are large enough to avoid included bark in crotches.

(Northern Sun Forsythia)

The Northern Sun Forsythia-Tree form, Forsythia 'Northern Sun', is a hardy Forsythia with huge bright yellow flowers in early spring before the foliage appears. The medium green foliage, on arching branches, is attractive all season. The tree form Forsythia makes a great vertical accent in a border or as a foundation plant. The clear yellow flowers, 3/4" wide and 1" in length, appear before foliage in late April.

A vigorous grower, it is adapted to a wide range of soils and has no serious pests. It is best planted in full sun to encourage free flowering. It is specifically recommended for landscape use in Minnesota and other northern areas where common Forsythias are not reliably hardy. Renewal pruning is useful to keep the plant shorter and more compact.
