Hamamellis 'Harvest Moon'

Hamamellis viginiana 'Harvest Moon'
(Harvest Moon Witchhazel)

An exciting introduction that we discovered in a client's garden. 'Harvest Moon' has attractive, burgundy-flushed new growth that matures to dark green. In late fall, plants offer numerous clusters of large, lemon-yellow flowers that are closely spaced along the branches. The overall effect is a much showier display than is common for the species. In our trials, plants have flowered up to two weeks later than the species and have consistently dropped their foliage prior to flowering. Under cultivation, plants are vigorous growers and assume an upright, vase-shaped habit maturing 15-18' tall in 15 years.

This outstanding cultivar from the U.S. National Arboretum has large, dramatic clusters of deep reddish-purple, fragrant flowers. Useful as a flowering informal screen, background shrub or specimen. A nice cut flower for a fragrant bouquet.

Hydrangea 'White Diamonds'

Hydrangea 'White Diamonds'

Hydrangea paniculata 'White Diamonds'
(White Diamonds Hydrangea)

Developed by Dr. Michael Dirr at the University of Georgia this paniculata is smaller and more manageable for a small garden or container than other paniculata's. Flower panicles of full glistening white are held high on stiff upright branches that don't flop all over the garden.

White Diamonds hydrangea had a humble beginning, planted in a red clay field near Athens, Georgia, the University of Georgia trial ground of noted plantsman, Dr. Michael Dirr. Planted with little to aid it except minimal irrigation, it withstood the exposure of a baking summer and a windswept winter. It proved equal to the challenge and it excelled in bloom.

The old PeeGee hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora') bloomed in summer on trunks like small trees. Recognizing the need for smaller forms of this sun-loving hydrangea, Dr. Dirr began breeding and selecting more compact forms. We believe this one is a winner with compact, dark green foliage that has a leathery texture, ideal to withstand summer heat and drought. The white summer blooms are frothy bouquets that invite compliments, both outdoors and indoors in a vase.Useful as a flowering informal screen, background shrub or specimen. A nice cut flower for a fragrant bouquet.
